JETcopter to test VTOL propulsion system

German-based VTOL start-up JETcopter is starting propulsion-system tests for its JETcopter concept.

The aircraft will be powered by two centrifugal air turbines in enclosed housings. The two 200cm turbines will be placed above the aircraft and contra-rotating to create the thrust. JETcopter claims that the thrust will be equivalent to an 11-metre helicopter rotor.

The thrust will be diverted via air ducts to create both thrust and propulsion.

The manufacturer claims that the aircraft is planned for operation in urban environments and will be safer to operate in cities than helicopters.

Tests will start on the mobile platform soon and will measure the airflow generated by the turbines, calculating speed, volume and sound at various RPM.

The aircraft will feature automatic levelling, allowing for easier control of the aircraft in comparison to current helicopters.

Fuselage will be developed from low-cost carbon fibre for a lighter and cheaper frame, the aircraft will also utilise powerful but inexpensive motors in order to keep the price of the aircraft down.

The main VTOL aircraft components can be installed without big investments to initial engineering. Both motors run at 400hp and are 1,000kg at empty weight. The main selling point is the high power:weight ratio. The concept features six-eight seats and is expected to have very low operational costs.

The company is open to investment opportunities and a full-scale mock-up of the aircraft will be presented at the AERO 2019 aviation exhibition in April 2019.

JETcopter expects the first prototype to be flying within 18 months.
